Whenever an aircraft traverses sovereign airspace or a Flight Information Region (FIR), the corresponding Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) levies a route navigation charge to finance radar coverage, air traffic control, and radio navigation facilities.
1. EUROCONTROL Formula (Europe & Partners)
Fee = UnitRate × (Distance / 100 km) × √(MTOW / 50)
Calculated based on actual kilometers flown in each state's airspace and proportional to the square root of Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) in metric tonnes.
2. United States FAA Formula (14 CFR § 187.53)
Overland: $61.75 / 100 NM • Oceanic: $26.51 / 100 NM
Unlike Europe, the US FAA charges a flat distance-based tariff per 100 Nautical Miles without scaling by aircraft weight.
3. Oceanic FIR Airspace
Transatlantic and transpacific routes pass through specialized oceanic control sectors like Shanwick Oceanic (EGGX), Gander Oceanic (CZQX), and New York Oceanic (KZWY), which charge dedicated flat crossing or distance rates.
